How Can You Tell the Quality of CBD Oil?

by Bonnie Hagen 20 May 2021

CBD oil can be used to help treat everything from depression to PTSD and chronic pain. However, because it is a natural supplement, it does not fall under FDA regulation. Some manufacturers take advantage of that to produce products that contain little actual CBD, which means that it may not be effective. How do you ensure that you’re getting a high-quality CBD oil product?

Look for the Hemp-Derived on the Label

First, look at the label to see if it says hemp-derived or marijuana-derived. Both plants contain CBD, but marijuana also contains THC, which is the psychoactive substance responsible for the “high”. Hemp, on the other hand, only has 0.3% THC and does not create any psychoactive effects or register on a drug test.

Look for Full-Spectrum

You’ll find products labeled as full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and CBD isolate. Of those three, full-spectrum is the better choice, as it ensures that the product contains all the cannabidiols, plus the associated terpenes (but with only 0.3% THC if it’s hemp-derived). Other products have fewer cannabidiols and few, if any, terpenes.

Words to Beware

Check the label for some warning words. For instance, if it only lists hemp seed oil or hemp seeds, or if it only mentions cannabis Sativa oil, it is not CBD. You want a hemp-derived product and the label should mention either cannabidiol or hemp extract. If it does not, you’re not getting actual CBD.

Check the Ingredients

You will not find a pure cannabidiol product on the market. Each one will use a carrier oil and possibly other ingredients. Make sure that you’re not sensitive to any of those ingredients. Some of the more commonly found ones include MCT oil, grapeseed oil, and even olive oil (carrier oils for the CBD), natural flavorings, artificial coloring, and more.

COA

Finally, look for a certificate of analysis (COA). This tells you the various cannabidiols and terpenes included with the formulation.

CBD may offer help for those struggling with chronic pain, severe PTSD, crippling anxiety, and other conditions. However, you must buy high-quality CBD oil, so check the label very carefully and only buy from a trusted brand.
